The aim of this study was to quantify the transfer of beverage packaging waste from SIGRE to the deposit system, by material, type of beverage, value and volume (evaluated in terms of number of units and weight). The study also aimed to assess the impact of the transfer of packaging and packaging waste on the financial flows of the entities managing specific flows and on municipalities/urban waste management systems, as well as to analyze the state of the art on the indirect benefits of implementing a deposit and reimbursement system (e.g. reducing littering, increasing the value of the material collected).
The methodology adopted was based on collecting quantitative information from the various links in the chain, using different sources of information to reconcile the information. Other studies were also analyzed to identify the potential indirect benefits of a deposit and refund system.
