The study aimed to assess the role that the photovoltaic sector can play in decarbonizing the national electricity system, given the advantages it presents, in particular each of the alternative solutions for centralized and decentralized energy production and its use, for injection into the grid and for self-consumption.
A methodology was developed to characterize the different solutions in technical, economic and environmental terms, together with an assessment of the potential for their adoption offered by the national built and unbuilt territory. Prospective scenarios for the development of installed capacity in Portugal were then evaluated, taking into account the respective economic and environmental impacts and, more broadly, the impacts on society, with a focus on energy consumers and users.
