This project consisted of drawing up a study to define a Development Plan for Pinhal Interior according to the principles of the Circular Economy and the Bioeconomy, contributing to the development of the business fabric and regional communities by identifying new or renewed bio-based economic activities based on the preservation of resources and the enhancement of local natural capital. In addition, the drafting of this strategy was intended to address the European, national and regional recommendation and need to develop sustainability strategies to unleash the potential of the bioeconomy, which depends on innovation, strategy development and the implementation of systemic changes covering different sectors (agriculture, forestry, fisheries, aquaculture, food production, industry dependent on biological resources), which in turn have the potential to improve the ability to translate opportunities from all types of innovation into new products and services on the market, creating jobs at local level.
The strategy developed is a contribution to the pursuit of some of the main national environmental strategies, namely the Roadmap to Carbon Neutrality 2050, the Action Plan for the Circular Economy (PAEC) and the National Spatial Planning Policy Plan (PNPOT), as well as a contribution to regional and local strategies, such as the Pinhal Interior Revitalization Program, the Intermunicipal Climate Change Adaptation Plan of the Coimbra Region CIM or the Centro Regional Agenda for the Circular Economy.
